I get questions fairly regularly. “Where do you get photos and artwork?” “What software do you use?” etc.

Financially and prayerfully supporting worldwide missions is not just a commandment for North American churches—it is a commandment for every local church in the entire world.

My conversation with preachers across the country persuades me that for many of us, finding “something to preach” Sunday after Sunday can be a difficult and frustrating task. It need not be so. Perhaps the following suggestions will help.

According to a popular Christian magazine, only approximately 20% of evangelical churches in America have a missions conference. I seriously doubt that the percentage in independent Baptist churches is much larger. I have had the opportunity to participate in over 1,300 missions conferences in the past 30 years.

Perhaps you’ve heard the suggested praise/correction ratio of 10/1. And perhaps, like me, you’ve found it easy to forget to be regular on the praise side of the ratio. Last summer at our annual staff training, my friend, Ken McCoy, was reminding our staff leaders to regularly praise team members. He shared a simple idea with us that he used when his children were small.

An illustration database is a good tool to help gather all source material in one place. Whether you are a Sunday school teacher, a helper in a class, a ministry leader or a senior pastor, having one location for your source material is very beneficial.

Excitement filled the air on the evening of “Who Is the King of the Jungle” Ladies Spring Event. As moms, daughters, and friends entered the campus they sensed the immediate anticipation as they saw the jeep and jungle decor outside. When they entered the lobby, ladies both young and old enjoyed the live wildlife.

The first time we held a missions conference, I was greatly disappointed by the attendance at the Monday and Tuesday evening services. I had assumed that our people would come because I had announced the meeting and had excellent missionaries in attendance.

This ladies event was used for a Ladies Night Out we organized here at Lancaster Baptist Church. The title of this event was Celebrate a New Day using the theme of Happy Birthday.

One area Independent Baptists are not lacking in is our full schedule of conferences and meetings. From coast to coast there are ample opportunities to attend meetings that will “re-charge your battery.”

I use a template document for typing my sermon notes. But I guard against a template philosophy in preparing my sermons. My church deserves fresh sermons that are prayed over and thoroughly studied for—not cycled through.

Christian hospitality is one of the most fruitful of ministry disciplines. Over the years, my wife and I have made a habit of having people over on a regular basis, and we’ve found that opening our home for fellowship often opens hearts for discipleship and mentoring.
