Promises! Promises! Promises! It seems like during every election cycle, politicians make a multitude of promises in hopes of being elected. If you are like me, you are not as interested in the promises as you are in the performance. It seems only reasonable to me that a man would not make a promise that he does not intend to keep and that expecting him to stand by his word is not too much to ask.
I am so glad that our God has given us many promises and that He absolutely performs His promises. I have never been disappointed in the faithfulness of our Lord as He has been true to His Word time and time again in my life.
When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, the Lord promised to send a Saviour who would defeat Satan (Genesis 3:15), and He did so in the Person of His own Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. It is through the death, burial, and resurrection that God promises salvation to all who believe on the Lord Jesus (John 3:16; Romans 10:9–13), and many of us can testify of His faithfulness to keep that promise.
The Lord promises to hear and answer our prayers (Jeremiah 33:3; 1 John 5: 14–15), and we have seen Him do it over and over again. The Lord promised that He would give us the Holy Spirit as our Comforter and Guide (John 16:7, 13; Acts 1:8), and we know His abiding presence and power as we navigate ourselves in this world. He has promised that Jesus would return again (John 14:1–3; Acts 1:11), so we await His appearance and return even today.
Having thought of God’s promises to us, have you made promises to God? Are you fulfilling those vows you have made to Him? Ecclesiastes 5: 4–5 reminds us, “When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay.” Keep your promises to God!
